Taxi hailing app Uber will “temporarily suspend” its ride-sharing operation in Macau, effective from Friday 23:59 p.m., the company said in a statement yesterday.
The US company, headquartered in San Francisco, began operations in Macau in October 2015. “Uber”, which means “super” in German, was founded in 2009 and began to expand globally in 2012.
Last year, through a letter made public by legislator Au Kam San, the company said its last day of operation in Macau would be on September 9, blaming the local government for not having a timetable to authorise ridesharing services and, at the same time, slapping its drivers with heavy fines and detaining its passengers “without legal basis”.
