Secretary for Transport and Public Works Raimundo do Rosario said yesterday that the replacement of a damaged section of pipe in the Macau Peninsula Wastewater Treatment Plant and the pollution it may cause were unavoidable, while eco-activists slammed the government for not having a back-up plan.

The plant, which has been in operation since 1995, is on the north-eastern coast of the peninsula.

The government announced on Wednesday that the operation of the plant will be suspended from next Monday to Wednesday for the replacement work, during which sewage produced in the peninsula will be pumped straight into the sea along the coast.
