Govt axes fireworks contest to focus on typhoon relief

A string of government events scheduled over the next few weeks leading up to National Day on October 1 have been cancelled so that all its resources can be used for typhoon relief, the Government Spokesperson Office (GPV) announced on Saturday.

A total of 16 public events and exchange programmes have been cancelled. This includes the 29th Macau International Fireworks Display Contest, which was scheduled to be held on September 2, 9, 16, 23 as well as October 1.

It is the first time that the annual contest has been cancelled in its almost three decades.

The budget for this year’s firework display contest was reported to be 25 million patacas with 10 companies from Australia, Austria, the UK, France, Japan, the Philippines, Germany, Italy, Portugal and mainland China.

Other events that have been cancelled include an exhibition of products from Macau and Portuguese-speaking countries scheduled to take place from Thursday to Sunday, the 2nd anniversary celebration of the Macau Design Centre, the Macau Fire Services’ participation in the 17th China Fire expo in Beijing, as well as the Unitary Police Service’s (UPS) second-quarter crime statistics press conference tomorrow.
