The retail price of pork in Macau is about three times higher than its wholesale price, the deputy managing director of the Ilha Verde Neighbourhood Mutual Assistance Association, Chan Fong, told The Macau Post Daily yesterday, adding that the prices of pork do vary widely depending on merchants.
Chan told The Macau Post Daily on the premises of the association in Avenida do Conselheiro Borja that: “Macau is a free market, businesspeople have the freedom to set prices high but it’s hard for customers to get a bargain”, adding that according to the Municipal Affairs Bureau’s (IAM) website, from June 14 to June 20, the wholesale price of fresh pork was 14.7 patacas per 500 grammes while the retail price stood at 44 patacas.
Many senior citizens can’t afford the high pork price and it’s common for them to buy fresh pork on the mainland and smuggle it into Macau via border checkpoints, Chan pointed out, adding that according to IAM’s website, the average pork price was 49.4 patacas per 500 grammes yesterday.
