Macau residents' unemployment rate stayed unchanged at 2.3 percent in the October-December 2019 survey period compared with the previous period of September-November 2019, the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) announced today.
Macau's overall jobless rate - comprising locals and non-resident workers - amounted to 1. 7 percent.
The city's total labour force stood at 396,500 and the labour force participation rate amounted to 70.2 percent in the October-December period. Total employment was 389,800 and the number of employed residents amounted to 281,600, up by 2,200 and 1,300 respectively from the previous period.
The number of unemployed was 6,700, an increase of 200 from the previous period. The proportion of new labour market entrants looking for their first job decreased by 2.9 percentage points to 16.3 percent of the total number of unemployed.
In the fourth quarter of last year, employment in the wholesale and retail sector (43,600) and transport, storage and communications sector (20,400) rose by 1,800 and 1,400 staff members respectively quarter-to-quarter, while that in restaurants and similar businesses (23,100) dropped by 2,100 employees.
For the whole of 2019, the overall unemployment rate was 1.7 percent, while the one of local employees stood at 2.3 percent, both down by 0.1 percentage point year-on-year.
According to the DSEC statement, the city's median monthly employment earnings of the employed (17,000 patacas) rose by 1,000 patacas, while those of employed residents (20,000 patacas) remained the same year-on-year.
The median monthly employment earnings per household fell by 1,000 patacas year-on-year to 29,000 patacas. The average number of employed persons per household stood at 1.6 last year, down by 0.1 year-on-year.
