A local man and his wife from the mainland were arrested on Wednesday for smuggling 14.5 grammes of drugs with an estimated street value of 28,000 patacas from Zhuhai to Macau, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Chan Wun Man said at a special press conference yesterday.
The suspects are a 38-year-old local man surnamed Song, who told the police that he works for an insurance company, and his 29-year-old jobless wife from the mainland surnamed Meng.
According to Chan, the Judiciary Police recently received a tipoff that someone was smuggling drugs from the mainland into Macau and selling them to customers at night entertainment venues.
PJ officers identified the couple who drove from the mainland on Wednesday afternoon via the Barrier Gate checkpoint back to their home in Nape.
According to Chan, the officers arrested them when they arrived at their home and seized four packets weighing 6.7 grammes of Ketamine and four wet wipe pouches containing the “happy powder” drug weighing about 7.8 grammes, with an estimated total street value of 28,000 patacas.
Under questioning, Song only confessed that he bought the drugs in the mainland and smuggled them into Macau to sell them here, but refused to provide further information while Meng denied any involvement. PJ officers are continuing their investigation in to the source of the drugs and other possible suspects involved in the case, Chan said.
The couple was transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) yesterday, facing a drug trafficking charge, according to Chan.
Evidence seized from the suspects such as four packets of drugs, four wet wipe pouches, two smartphones and Hong Kong dollar and pataca notes are displayed during yesterday’s special press conference about the city’s latest drug smuggling case, at the pressroom of the Judiciary Police (PJ) headquarters.
