A local man, surnamed Kong, was arrested on Saturday for leaving the scene of an accident after police officers found his registration plate at the scene, the Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Kam Ka Kit said during Wednesday’s regular press conference.

According to Kam, a car accident at the junction of Avenida do Conselheiro Ferreira de Almeida and Rua de Sacadura Cabral was reported to the police at 1:35 a.m. last Saturday. Kam said that when the police officers arrived at the scene, they found multiple roadside protection barriers that were damaged and a car’s front registration plate.

Kam said with the registration plate, the police officers were able to find the vehicle’s owner and went to his flat in Avenida de Horta e Costa but when they knocked on the suspect’s door, no one responded. Kam added that the security guards of the building led them to the building’s car park and found the suspect’s car. Kam said the police found damage and green paint from the barriers on the vehicle.

According to Kam, the 38-year-old suspect went to a police station and admitted the crime at 5:30 p.m. Kong said that he was driving home after work on Saturday at 1 a.m., hitting multiple barriers at the junction at 1:16 a.m. Kam said Kong insisted that he had not drunk any alcohol, and that he was just “too tired” after work. However, Kam said, too much time had passed for Kong to be given a breathalyser.

According to Kam, the suspect was transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) on Monday. Kam added that Kong faces a charge of avoiding responsibility for a traffic accident.
