Sands China said in a statement earlier this week that the popular “Poetic Dance Drama: “The Journey of a Legendary Landscape Painting” – “A Panorama of Mountains and Rivers” will return to The Venetian Theatre in Cotai from July 18 to 21.

The integrated resort (IR) operator noted that the performance at the theatre last year had an overwhelming response, with all five shows welcoming a full house. The show’s return, which has been brought back to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and the 25th anniversary of Macau’s return to the motherland, also proved popular as tickets for July 19 and 21 are already sold out, the statement noted.

The statement said that the show has been presented to 60 cities since debuting in 2021, spanning over 1,000 days and delivering over 500 performances. It has garnered prizes such as the 17th Wenhua Grand Prize and achieved the highest box office sales in the Chinese stage performance market in 2022 and 2023. It has also been taken to Singapore and Turkey, with sights set for places such as Canada, Russia and Japan, according to the statement.

Part of the Sands China Performing Arts Programme, the show is also a key supported work of the “Stage Art Masterpiece Creation Project Celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the Founding of the Communist Party of China.” It takes its inspiration from the Chinese landscape painting, “A Thousand Miles of Rivers and Mountains” by Wang Ximeng (1096–1119).

Through the “poetic dance” genre, this show, which integrates culture, art and dance, takes the audience on a journey through legendary and charming traditional Chinese aesthetics. The statement added that it features original music, costumes, lighting and multimedia design, while the high-tech stage design features multiple turntables within the stage floor and aerial tracks to better present the illusion of interweaving time and space.

Sands China Ltd. Executive Vice Chairman Wilfred Wong Ying-wai was quoted by the statement as saying: “This performance perfectly illustrates how vitality can be injected into the Chinese legacy by blending the genres of painting, dance, and theatre. As Macau celebrates its designation as a Culture City of East Asia 2025, this event holds great significance. It exemplifies Macau’s role as a hub for cultural exchange, as the show’s Macau tour last year marked its first performance outside the mainland before it ventured into overseas markets.”
