The Wushu General Association of Macau announced in a statement yesterday that local martial artists clinched one gold and one silver on the second day of the Asian Games.
The 20th Asian Games are taking place from Saturday to October 4 in Aichi-Nagoya, western Japan. The Games will run for 16 days, featuring 43 sports.
According to the statement, Macau martial artist Kuong Chi Hin won a gold medal with 9.723 points in the Men’s Changquan event of Wushu Taolu at the Games, which officially began yesterday morning.
He previously won a gold medal in the men’s long spear competition at the Taolu World Cup (TWC), held by the International Wushu Federation in July, as well as a silver medal at the World Championships, the statement noted.
Meanwhile, in the same event, fellow Macau martial artist Song Chi Kuan clinched a silver medal with 9.720 points. Indonesian martial artist Siregar S.N. also scored 9.720 points but took the bronze medal due to a lower difficulty score.
Chief Executive Sam Hou Fai sent a congratulatory letter to the Macau delegation yesterday. He stated that in the Men’s Changquan event, the athletes showed no fear of strong opponents and pressed forward with determination, carrying forward the Chinese sporting spirit and winning honour for Macau. He added that the achievements of Kuong and Song were the result of arduous daily training and tenacious effort, serving as a source of great pride for the people of Macau.
He expressed his hope that all Macau athletes would continue to maintain high morale, strive courageously to be the best, fully demonstrate a positive and enterprising spirit, successfully complete their mission, and win even greater honour for Macau.
The head of the Macau delegation, Pun Weng Kun, told reporters at the venue yesterday that he was delighted with the athletes’ success. He noted that this is the third consecutive Asian Games at which Macau has won a gold medal, and the first time in Macau’s history that both the gold and silver medals in the same event have been won by local athletes.
Besides demonstrating the athletes’ hard work and dedication, Pun noted that this achievement serves as an inspiration, adding that he hopes the delegation will continue to strive for success in the remaining events.
