A man from the mainland was arrested on Friday for theft by finding after stealing a chip worth HK$10,000, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Lei Chan Hong said during a regular press conference yesterday.

Lei identified the suspect as a man surnamed Li, who is in his forties.

According to Lei, the Public Security Police (PSP) received a report on Friday morning from a middle-aged mainland man who told the police that a HK$10,000 chip had gone missing while he was checking in at a hotel front desk in Cotai. He searched for the chip, but in vain. He suspected that someone had stolen his chip, and reported the case to the police.

Lei noted that thanks to the city-wide CCTV network and the casino’s surveillance footage, the police identified Li as the suspect and intercepted him in a hotel lobby in Zape. The police also confiscated HK$30,000 in cash from him.

Under questioning, Li admitted to stealing the chip and then using it to gamble at a casino, winning HK$2,000.

Li has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing a charge of theft by finding.
