Macau’s population stood at 683,200 at the end of last year, an increase of just 100 compared to the end of 2020, the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) said in a statement yesterday.
Females accounted for 53.0 percent of the population at the end of 2021.The proportion of the elderly population (aged 65 and above) grew by 0.5 percentage points year-on-year to 12.2 percent.
The local population – which doesn’t include non-resident workers and non-local students living in Macau – increased by 1.1 percent year-on-year to 570,100, of whom 53.1 percent were females.
Among the local population, the elderly and young people (aged up to 14) took up 14.6 percent and 17.4 percent of the total respectively. The elderly dependency ration for the local population stood at 21.5 percent, indicating that about five adults supported one elderly person.
In 2021, a total of 5,026 live births were delivered, down by 519 year-on-year; the birth rate was 7.4 percent, the lowest level recorded since 2005.
The sex ratio of newborns was 113.0, i.e., 113 male babies per 100 female babies.
At the end of last year, 171,098 non-resident workers lived in Macau, a decrease of 6,565 year-on-year.
The number of households stood at 202,700 at the end of 2021, up by 3,000 from the end of 2020.
