Three plots of land have been repurposed into temporary outdoor public car parks, and are slated to open progressively from this month to alleviate parking demand in their respective areas, including plots located on Rua da Cordoaria in Coloane (the former Flying Eagle Training Base), the original site of Julieta Nobre de Carvalho Building (嘉翠麗大廈) in Toi San, and next to the Maritime Training School in Barra, according to a statement released by the Transport Bureau (DSAT) and Public Works Bureau (DSOP) yesterday.

The statement noted that the Transportation Bureau and Public Works Bureau have adopted a dual-track approach of “planned utilisation + temporary use” to transform several plots of land into temporary public facilities that benefit residents’ livelihoods.

The statement added that three temporary outdoor public car parks are expected to provide a total of 194 vehicle parking spaces and 140 motorcycle parking spaces, and some of the spaces will also be equipped with electric vehicle charging piles.

The statement pointed out that the selection of these three locations specifically addresses long-standing community parking challenges, such as  Coloane, which, as a popular tourist destination and historic residential area, faces a shortage of parking spaces, particularly during holidays and weekends.

Meanwhile, Toi San district, with its dense population, experiences tight parking supply, the statement said, thus the original site of the demolished second block of Julieta Nobre de Carvalho Building has been repurposed into a temporary outdoor public car park, and part of the space will be used to add a bus bay* and adjust the local bus route layout, the statement said, adding that this not only supplements parking resources but also contributes to the overall improvement of the area’s transportation environment.

Moreover, the car park next to the Maritime Training School in Barra previously faced issues with metered parking spaces being occupied for extended periods, the statement said. It pointed out that by converting it into a managed public car park with gated access, the utilisation rate and turnover of the parking spaces are expected to improve.

The statement added that these optimised layouts are projected to meet the demand for parking and stopping spaces in the relevant areas, enhancing travel convenience for residents and visitors alike.
