A local man has been arrested for deceiving a mainlander by claiming to be able to purchase a bottle of spirits on his behalf and then scamming him out of HK$5,000, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Leong Chi Seng said during a regular press conference yesterday.
The 32-year-old suspect surnamed Wong told the police that he works as a driver.
According to Leong, in late May a man from the mainland was introduced by a friend of his to Wong who claimed that he could buy a bottle of spirits for him for HK$5,000.
After the payment, the victim lost contact with Wong and subsequently reported the case to the police on May 31.
Wong was summoned to a police station for questioning on Tuesday, where he admitted to defrauding the victim. He also claimed that he had spent all the ill-gotten money.
Wong has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing a fraud charge, according to Leong.
