Yesterday, a spokesperson for the Central People’s Government’s Liaison Office in the Macao Special Administrative Region issued a statement conveying congratulations on the successful conduct of the eighth Legislative Assembly election. The spokesperson extended warm congratulations to the 14 members elected directly and the 12 members elected indirectly.
The spokesperson highlighted that this election was the first to be held under the newly amended Legislative Assembly Election Law and is a significant event in Macao’s political life. The Chief Executive and the Special Administrative Region Government fulfilled their roles as primary authorities, fully implementing the principle of “Patriots Governing Macao,” and organised the election lawfully and in an orderly manner. Civil servants took the lead in exercising their democratic rights and fulfilling their civic duties, encouraging various sectors of Macao society and residents to pay attention to the election and participate enthusiastically in voting.
The Electoral Affairs Commission for the Legislative Assembly Election and relevant functional departments of the Special Administrative Region advanced the election process in accordance with their legal responsibilities and procedural steps, ensuring that the election was conducted lawfully, fairly, justly, and with integrity. Both direct and indirect election candidacy groups actively participated, engaging with voters and gathering public opinions, while fostering healthy competition that showcased a new atmosphere of patriotism and dedication to Macao.
Voters approached the election with a sense of ownership, earnestly exercising their electoral rights as granted by the Basic Law of Macao, and casting their sacred ballots. This reflects the true spirit of the residents of Macao taking charge of their governance and serves as a vivid illustration of Macao embarking on a new journey towards the rule of law and democratic development from a new starting point.
The spokesperson remarked that the Chinese nation is making unstoppable strides towards great rejuvenation, and Macao is experiencing its best period of development. Electing a high-quality new Legislative Assembly meets the new requirements of Macao’s “One Country, Two Systems” practice entering a new phase and aligns with the new expectations of various sectors of Macao society and its residents.
The 26 elected members are all steadfast patriots with a commitment to serving society and possess the capability to take on their responsibilities; the structure of the Legislative Assembly has been optimised, achieving a transition between the new and the old. It is believed that the new Legislative Assembly members will actively perform their duties, uphold the core values of patriotism and love for Macao, widely listen to public opinion, and consolidate social forces, continually enhancing their ability to participate in governance and serve the public.
They are also expected to better promote constructive interaction between the executive and legislative branches, support the Special Administrative Region Government in governing according to the law, and improve the effectiveness of governance in the Special Administrative Region. Furthermore, they should unite all sectors of society to focus on economic development, accelerate the appropriate diversification of the economy, create a higher-level platform for opening up, and maintain social harmony and stability, making new and greater contributions to national strengthening and the rejuvenation of the nation.
