An exhibition titled “DESPERDÍCIO” is currently being held at the Hold On to Hope Gallery in the Village of Our Lady in Ka-Ho until October 9, with the works mostly created from objects found on Hac-Sa beach.
The exhibition title directly translates as “waste”.
A statement from the gallery noted that the works by Angolan artist Tchusca Songo were created to promote Reuse, Recycle, and Reduce (aka the 3 Rs). The statement said that concerning these actions, Macau “still has a lot of work ahead of it”.
The objects used to create the artworks include fishing nets, tree trunks, beach toys and lost objects washed up or unearthed during storms, among others, the statement said.
Songo, according to the statement, was born in the Angolan exclave of Cabinda in 1978 and moved to Macau in 2006. The topics of her artwork comprise nature conservation and waste recycling. The statement added that she has a Product Design degree from the University of Saint Joseph-Macau (USJ) and has experience in woodblock printing, traditional lantern making, photography, jewellery, and puppetry, and she also has participated in exhibitions.
In line with the government’s COVID-19 pandemic prevention measures, visitors must wear a facemask, undergo a temperature check, scan the venue QR code and present a valid green Macau Health Code.
