The 17-day-long repaving of the Guia Circuit prior to November’s 70th Macau Grand Prix (MGP) will be carried out from tomorrow, Sports Bureau (ID) President Pun Weng Kun announced yesterday, promising that most of the works will be completed this month, with a small number of repairs slated to start on September 16.

Considering that most local schools will start their new academic year at the beginning of next month, Pun underlined that the repaving in September will only take place on Saturdays or at night.

The “sports tourism branding” event will take place on November 11-12 and November 16-19, Pun reaffirmed.

Pun made the remarks in a speech during a joint press conference, which was held along with an official from the Transport Bureau (DSAT) and an officer from the Public Security Police (PSP), at the ID headquarters in Zape.

Pun said that the Macau Grand Prix Organising Committee (MGPOC) has been committed to improving the event’s equipment and track infrastructure over the years, adding that with the aim of enabling the track facilities to be up to the standard of hosting high-level international events, work on repaving the Guia Circuit is carried out during every summer holiday in August.

Pun reaffirmed that the MGPOC will coordinate with the DSAT and the PSP to ensure appropriate traffic arrangements during the repaving works, so as to minimise any possible impact on the public.

According to the press conference, the repaving works carried out between Estrada de S. Francisco and Estrade de Cacilhas will start tomorrow through next Thursday, between President Hotel and Praça Flor de Lótus on Avenida da Amizade from next Thursday through August 25, and on Rua dos Pescadores and Fisherman’s Bend from August 24 through August 26.

After the new school year starts in early September, the press conference noted, the resurfacing of Ramal dos Mouros will be carried out on September 16, with the work on Avenida da Amizade around the reservoir scheduled to be completed at night on September 18-19, while the repaving of Melco Bend was slated to be finished on September 23.

Taking into account the possible impact on traffic, according to the press conference, the relevant resurfacing work lasting 17 days will be carried out in four phases during off-peak hours, i.e., from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on weekdays and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturdays.
