A male senior citizen from Hong Kong, who fainted on the second floor of the Outer Harbour Ferry Terminal in Zape on Tuesday, was pronounced dead later that evening after unsuccessful attempts to revive him, according to a statement by the Judiciary Police (PJ) early yesterday morning.
The statement by PJ spokesman Lei Chi Hou noted that the Judiciary Police were notified of the death by the public Conde de São Januário Hospital Centre’s emergency department at 9:41 p.m. on Tuesday, pointing out that the 70-year-old victim, who had been rushed there by ambulance from the Outer Harbour Ferry Terminal, had been pronounced dead by the hospital, adding that the victim was no longer breathing and had no heartbeat upon his arrival at the hospital.
According to the terminal’s CCTV footage, the statement said, walking unsteadily the man entered the terminal alone from the footbridge leading from Casino Oceanus and sat down on a chair in the waiting area of the terminal’s departure hall on the second floor, during which no one approached him.
The statement noted that suddenly the victim fainted and slid from the chair, hitting his head on the back of the chair next to him, sustaining a two-centimetre laceration to his right eye.
Passengers witnessing the accident alerted the terminal’s staff about the incident, urging them to call the police.
A preliminary examination of the body showed, according to the statement, that apart from the laceration, no other signs or marks of injuries caused by violence were discovered on the victim’s body.
The case has been initially classified as a dead body found, according to the statement, which noted that the exact cause of death still needed to be confirmed by forensic examination.
