Macau's number of visitor arrivals fell 99.3 percent year-on-year to 22,556 last month, from 3.09 million in June last year, according to data released by the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) today. 

However, the number rose 39.8 percent month-on-month. May recorded 16,133 visitor arrivals, down by 99.5 percent year-on-year. In May, the number of visitor arrivals increased 46.1 percent month-on-month. 

Last month, same-day visitors and overnight visitors totalled 13,205 and 9,351 respectively. 

Mainlanders accounted for 93.4 percent of all visitors arrivals in June. Their number dropped 99 percent year-on-year. June recorded 1,142 visitors from Hong Kong and 326 from Taiwan. 

Last month recorded 22,443 visitor arrivals by land and just 113 by air. Macau's ferry links with Hong Kong and Shenzhen have been suspended for several months in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. 

In the first half of this year, the number of visitor arrival decreased 83.9 percent year-on-year to 3.26 million. On average, overnight visitors stayed for 2.7 days, up by 0.5 day on the first six month of last year. 

Macau's tourism and gaming sectors have been severely affected by the economic impact of the novel coronavirus pandemic. 

Macau has recorded 46 COVID-19 cases since late January. All the patients have meanwhile been discharged from hospital.

Foreign nationals without a local residence permit have been barred from entering Macau since the middle of March.
