HK girlfriend faces aiding & abetting charges

A gambler from Taiwan was arrested last week for overstaying in Macau for 15 years, while his Hong Kong girlfriend, who is currently not in Macau, faces an aiding and abetting charge, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Kam Ka Kit said at a regular press conference yesterday.

The 53-year-old suspect is surnamed Lin. His 49-year-old girlfriend is a Hong Kong resident surnamed Ng.

According to Kam, PSP officers on routine patrol duty in Estrada da Vitória last Thursday night found Lin acting suspiciously so they stopped him and asked him for his ID. The officers discovered that Lin has been overstaying in Macau for nearly 15 years and took him to a police station for follow-up investigation.

Under questioning, Lin said that he had previously worked for a securities company in Taiwan. He travelled to Macau to gamble in local casinos in 2005. Afterwards, he claimed, casino gambling became his way of earning a living.

Lin told the police that he met his Hong Kong girlfriend in 2003 and she helped him rent a flat in Macau through a real estate agent and used her name as the tenant. According to Kam, Ng has been renting the flat for Lin in Avenida do Nordeste in Areia Preta for over 10 years, but Lin is the one who has been paying the rent.

According to Kam, Lin told the police that his girlfriend has not been able to come to Macau for nearly a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He gave her smartphone number to the police, but Public Security Police have been unable to contact Ng. The police are continuing their investigation and are tracing Ng’s whereabouts, Kam said.

Lin was transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) last Friday, facing overstaying charges, while Ng faces a charge of aiding and abetting illegal immigration, according to Kam.
