A 39-year-old local man suffered accidental carbon monoxide poisoning when showering in his flat in the Avenida de Horta e Costa neighbourhood yesterday, the Fire Services Bureau (CB) said in a statement.
The man felt dizzy when taking a shower in the bathroom in his flat in Kou Wang Building, which is located at the corner of Rua de Pedro Coutinho and the thoroughfare. He immediately opened the window.
The man was taken by his family members to the private Kiang Wu Hospital for treatment. There was no follow-up information by the authorities on his condition.
Firefighters equipped with gas detectors went to the flat, which is near McDonald’s Fast Food restaurant, for examination. They detected carbon monoxide, with the gas detectors reading amounts between 40 PPM and 45 PPM (parts per million), in the bathroom, where a ventilator and an LPG water heater not equipped with an exhaust pipe are installed.
According to the statement, the firefighters switched on the LPG water heater, after which the gas detectors read an amount of 1,000 PPM.
