Macau residents' unemployment rate dropped by 0.1 percentage point to 4.0 percent in September-November 2020 compared to the previous survey period (August-October 2020), the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) has announced.
According to a DSEC statement earlier this week, Macau's general unemployment rate - which covers residents and non-resident workers - remained unchanged at 2.9 percent.
The general underempoyment rate rose 0.2 percentage points to 5.4 percent.
The labour force living in Macau totalled 397,800 in the September-November period, when the labour force participation rate stood at 70.0 percent.
The total number of employed amounted to 386,200, a decrease of 900 from the previous period. The number of employed residents totalled 278,300, up by 1,000.
While employment in restaurants and the construction sector fell, that in the retail sector rose.
The number of unemployed fell by 100 from the previous survey period to 11,600. Among the jobless looking for a new job, most were previously employed by gaming-cum-junket businesses and the construction sector.
The number of underemployed rose by 600 to 21,400, most of them working for casinos and junket operators as well as the transport and storage sector.
In comparison with September-November 2019, the general underemployment rate, unemployment rate and labour force participation rate rose by 4.9, 1.2 and 0.1 percentage points respectively.
The bureau pointed out that, based on immigration records, Macau residents and non-resident workers who in the September-November 2020 period worked in Macau but lived outside the territory numbered 82,500; when including these individuals, Macau's total labour force stood at 480,300 during the period, a decrease of 700 from the previous period.
According to the latest demographic statistics, Macau's population amounted to 682,800 at the end of the third quarter 2020.
According to the Labour Affairs Bureau (DSAL), Macau's number of non-resident workers stood at 180,962 at the end of November 2020 including 114,208 mainlanders, 31,734 Filipinos and 12,717 Vietnamese.
