Macau has around 780 residential buildings and the residents living in them have a recycling rate of 50 to 60 percent, Choi Tat Meng, deputy convener of the Taipa and Coloane Community Service Consultative Council, said yesterday.
Choi made the remarks during a press briefing after the council’s closed-door meeting with Environmental Protection Bureau (DSPA) officials.
Choi said that according to DSPA officials, in Iao Hon district the bureau will set up a recycling “green points” station, adding that the bureau expects to start operating the new station in the first half of this year.
Choi said that during the closed-door meeting, the officials said that starting from this year the bureau is recycling six types of plastic. However, Choi said some council members expressed concern that residents may not be able to distinguish the six types of plastic, adding that the council members said they hoped the bureau would add labels or examples on the recycling bins. Choi added that for more information on plastic recycling, residents can visit the bureau’s website.
Choi did not name the DSPA officials.
Claw machine addiction
Moreover, during yesterday’s meeting, civic leader Chu Oi Lei raised concern about claw machines. She said that in recent years many claw machine parlours have been attracting lots of teenagers and pupils after school or during the weekend. She noted that in 2019 cases were reported in Hong Kong where people were in debt after being addicted to claw machines. She pointed out that there might be a “gambling element” when playing on the claw machines, therefore she hoped that the government could regulate claw machine operations.
