Las Vegas Sands Chairman and CEO Sheldon G. Adelson has taken medical leave of absence for receiving treatment of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, his company announced this week.
The US gaming company announced the leave of absence in a statement in Las Vegas on Thursday. The leave took effect on that day.
The statement said that "Mr Adelson recently resumed his cancer treatment and will be taking leave of absence as of today [January 7] from his role as chairman and chief executive officer of both Las Vegas Sans (NYSE: LVS) and Sands China Ltd."
The statement said that "the companies' boards of directors have named Robert Goldstein, currently Las Vegas Sands president and chief operating officer, as acting chairman and acting chief operating officer of both organisations while Mr Adelson is on medical leave."
Adelson, 87, is the founder of Las Vegas Sands Corp.
Goldstein assumed the role of president and chief operating officer of Las Vegas Sands in January 2015 after serving in a variety of leadership positions since joining the company in 1995.
Sands China Ltd. owns five of Macau's 41 casinos including the flagship Venetian in Cotai.
According to the American Cancer Society, non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) is a cancer that starts in white blood cells called lymphocytes, which are part of the body’s immune system.
