A man was arrested on Saturday for his sham marriage to a local woman so that he could obtain a Macau ID card, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Chan Wun Man said at a regular press conference yesterday.
The 57-year-old jobless suspect is a mainlander surnamed Zhu, who obtained his non-permanent Macau ID card in August 2019. The 54-year-old jobless local woman surnamed Wong was arrested when she entered Macau in October last year. Chan said both lived separately in the mainland most of the time.
According to Chan, the Judiciary Police received a tip-off in February as well as a notification from the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) about the suspected shame marriage in April last year.
According to Chan, PJ officers discovered that Zhu and Wong tied the knot in the mainland in 2007. Both lived separately in the mainland and they never lived together in Macau. Wong subsequently applied for her “husband” to move to Macau for a family reunion, and he was able to obtain a non-permanent Macau ID card on August 13, 2019, Chan said.
According to Chan, Wong was arrested at the Barrier Gate checkpoint when she entered Macau on October 20 last year. Wong admitted to the bogus marriage and told the police that she had owed HK$50,000 in gambling debts years ago. With the help of Zhu’s family from the mainland, Wong paid off her debts. Afterwards, she was persuaded by Zhu’s family to reciprocate the “deal” by agreeing to the sham marriage.
According to Chan, Zhu was arrested when he entered the Barrier Gate checkpoint on Saturday. Zhu denied the crime.
Zhu was transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) yesterday, facing a special document forgery charge, according to Chan.
