A local man with a record for driving under the influence (DUI) in 2019 was arrested earlier this week for the same crime again as well as evasion of legal responsibility near Praça do Lago Sai Van, Public Security Police (PSP) Wong Wai Chon said at a regular press conference on Wednesday.

The 26-year-old man surnamed Ka told the police that he is a customer service officer.

According to Wong, PSP officers received a report on Monday that a car had crashed into a tree near Praça do Lago Sai Van.

Traffic police officers rushed to the scene to investigate. They found two cars at the scene. While the front of one of the cars was damaged, two men were in the other car that was undamaged. Ka was also at the scene.

The police officers confirmed that one of the men was Ka’s friend, who told them that he had asked the other man to drive the car for him, and that neither were involved in the crash. The duo told the police that they had stopped at the scene of the crash after seeing Ka’s car had crashed into the tree.

When questioned by the police about the accident, Ka denied that he had been behind the wheel when his car hit the tree.

Ka was later taken to a police station for further questioning and his car was towed away.

According to Wong, Ka was given a breathalyser test which showed that the alcohol concentration was 1.6 grammes of alcohol per litre of blood.

After being confronted with CCTV footage from the scene, Ka finally admitted that he was the driver. He told the officers that he had been drinking at a bar in Nam Van earlier that night and hit the tree after losing control of the car. The officers discovered that Ka has a DUI record from May 2019, which resulted in a 15-month driving ban.

Ka was transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) on Monday, awaiting trial for DUI and evasion of legal responsibility charges, according to Wong.
