A male civil servant was arrested recently for beating his wife and their son, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Ho Chan Nam said at a regular press conference yesterday.
The 45-year-old local suspect surnamed Lei is a civil servant involved in clerical work. The couple have two children – a 10-year-old son and a five-year-old daughter.
According to Ho, a local woman in her forties reported to the Public Security Police (PSP) on January 17 that she had been attacked by her husband at home in Santo António district.
She told the police that earlier that day she scolded her daughter in her bedroom while reviewing her homework, but her husband was dissatisfied with her being too harsh on their daughter. Her husband rushed into the room and started to quarrel with her, according to her statement to the police.
Ho said that the victim mostly looks after their daughter, while her husband mostly looks after their son.
Lei dragged her out of the bedroom and, according to her statement, she fell, hitting her head on the wardrobe. Her husband then allegedly punched her in the head. The victim left home and straight away reported the case to the Public Security Police, which passed the case to the Judiciary Police for follow-up.
According to Ho, PJ officers went to Lei’s home on the same day to investigate. Lei admitted that he had dragged his wife out of their daughter’s bedroom and that she fell to the floor, but denied beating her. He also admitted that he often beats their son when he doesn’t do what he is told.
Lei’s wife told the police that her husband often beats or slaps her and their children due to the children’s discipline issues and petty family matters. The son told the police that his father often physically punishes him when he’s naughty.
Ho said according to a doctor’s examination, the boy had a wound on his face and the mother suffered a head injury, scratches on her chest, and abrasions on her hands and feet.
Lei was transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) on Friday, facing charges of domestic violence and causing bodily harm, according to Ho.
