Guests drop 72.5 pct last year
Macau’s 120 hotels and guesthouses recorded 579,000 guests last month, a month-on-month growth of 22.4 percent but a year-on-year decline of 52.5 percent, according to data released by the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) yesterday.
In November, the sector recorded 473,000 guests.
Mainlanders accounted for 85 percent of all hotel guests in December. Some 61,000 of the hotel guests were locals, accounting for 10.5 percent of the total number of hotel guests last month. Staycations have been popular in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic which has prevented most locals from holidaying abroad. In November, the number of staycationers stood at 47,000.
In December, the number of available guestrooms decreased year-on-year by 8.2 percent to 35,000.
Last month, the sector’s average room occupancy rate grew month-on-month by 9.1 percentage points to 53.1 percent. Year-on-year, the rate dropped by 38.9 percentage points.
In the whole year of 2020, the average room occupancy rate fell by 62.2 percentage points to 28.6 percent. The number of guests dropped by 72.5 percent to 3.87 million last year.
Data on hotels and guesthouses used for quarantine were excluded in the compilation of the statistical data, the bureau pointed out.
