Macau's gross gaming revenue rose 2.6 percent month-on-month to 8.02 billion patacas (US$1 billion) in January, the casino sector's highest monthly revenue since February 2020, according to data released by the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ) today.

Macau's first COVID-19 case was confirmed on January 22 last year. While January 2020 still recorded gross gaming revenue of 22.1 billion patacas, it plummeted to just 3.1 billion patacas in the following month, when Macau started to be hard hit by the impact of the novel coronavirus epidemic on the local economy. June recorded last year's lowest revenue, when it stood at just 716 million patacas.

Macau has confirmed 47 novel coronavirus cases since last January, none of them fatal.

Year-on-year, last month's gross gaming revenue dropped by 63.7 percent.

Macau's casinos have suffered year-on-year declines every month since October 2019.

In 2020, gross gaming revenue decreased by 79.3 percent to 60.4 billion patacas. At the end of last year, 37 of Macau's 41 casinos run by six rival operators were in operation.
