Northern District Community Service Consultative Council member Kuan Cheong Wun Ian said yesterday that all the banks participating in the “Simple Pay” system should ensure the safety of customers’ information and avoid leaks.

Kuan Cheong made the remarks during a regular meeting of the council at the Government Service Centre in Areia Preta. The meeting was open to the media.

Kuan Cheong also suggested that banks use double verification to ensure users’ information safety. She also proposed that the system be implemented on public transport as well.

The first-phase trial run of the system starts on Monday.

Fellow councillor Hong Wai Tong also suggested that “Simple Pay” be expanded to more aspects of residents’ daily life. He said that the “Simple Pay” could be incorporated in the government’s “Single Account Portal” so that residents could pay e-bills online. He also said he hoped that the “Single Account Portal” could expand its scope for residents to sign up for subsidies, flu shot appointments and tax payments. He said that the current “Single Account Portal” functions were “far from residents’ ideal” of a government online app.

Concerns about sports facilities

Councillor Tai Iun Fong said that residents in the northern district were concerned about the usage of the Lin Fong Sports Centre near Fai Chi Kei Health Centre. Tai said that since the 2018 termination of greyhound racing at the centre, more residents have been entering the centre for daily exercises. He said that every day an average of 2,000 residents are using the centre, noting that the centre’s peak hours are between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. He said that residents were complaining that the four running track lanes are often full of people, adding that accidents happen when people are not paying attention to their surroundings.

Tai urged the government to expand the running track lanes and also to ensure that residents run in the same direction to avoid unnecessary accidents.
