A local man and a mainland woman were arrested separately last week for entering into a sham marriage for which she offered the man free sex instead of money, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Kam Ka Kit said at a regular press conference yesterday.

The 36-year-old female jobless suspect surnamed Hu is from the mainland. The 41-year-old local male suspect surnamed Tang works as a casino dealer.

According to Kam, during the police’s winter anti-crime operation in Cotai on Friday, the Public Security Police (PSP) discovered that a woman was continuously harassing male passers-by in the area and suspected her of engaging in prostitution. The Public Security Police found out that Hu had entered Macau with a family visit permit. However, when PSP officers asked about her husband, Hu was unable to say much about him. Consequently, the officers suspected that Hu was involved in a bogus marriage so that she could stay in Macau longer and earn a living as a prostitute.

Under questioning, Hu told the police that she met her “husband” (Tang) when she was working as a masseuse in Zhuhai in 2014. They met again in a local casino in 2019. Hu asked Tang to enter into a fake marriage so that she could stay longer in Macau to work as a prostitute. Hu offered to provide free sex in exchange for Tang’s assistance in arranging the sham marriage, according to Kam.

Kam said the duo married in the mainland in January 2020 and Hu entered Macau multiple times with family visit permits. Hu said that after “marrying” Tang she had provided her “husband” with eight free sex sessions, but they never lived together. According to information provided by Hu, PSP officers arrested Tang at his home in Iao Hon district on Saturday. Kam said the Tang’s statement to the police was similar to Hu’s about the case.

The duo were transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) yesterday morning, facing a document forgery charge, according to Kam.
