A female non-resident worker from the mainland has been defrauded out of 26,000 yuan in an online gambling scam, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Lai Chio Hong said at a regular press conference on Monday.

According to Lai, the victim, who is in her forties, reported the case to the police on Friday. She told the police that she works in Macau and returns to Zhuhai each day after work.

She saw an online gambling website in a street advertisement near the Barrier Gate checkpoint about half a month ago. She was curious and downloaded the app. She then opened an account and transferred some money and started to gamble on “tai sai” (大細), a game of chance also known in English as “big and small”, “sic bo” and “cussec”.

She transferred a total of 26,000 yuan into the gambling account in about two weeks. The victim said that according to the app she won a total of 80,000 yuan in a short time. However, she found out soon that she was unable to withdraw any of the money. After discussing the matter with a friend, she suspected that she had been deceived and decided to report the case to the police.

The Judiciary Police are following up on the case and no one was arrested at the time of the press conference, according to Lai.
