A local man and a male mainlander were arrested for embezzling a local casino in Cotai out of HK$270,000 in a slot-machine ruse, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Chan Wun Man said at a regular press conference on Monday.

The two suspects are a 27-year-old suspect surnamed Ng employed by the casino as a slot-machine attendant for five years, and a 34-year-old jobless mainlander surnamed Tang.

According to Chan, a monitoring system supervisor of the casino in Cotai reported to the Judiciary Police (PJ) on January 21 that a male slot machine attendant surnamed Ng was suspected to have conspired with a male gambler to cheat the casino out of HK$270,000.

The supervisor told the police that when the gambler hit a losing streak, Ng used a special key to open an aperture of the slot machine, reset the game and then refunded the money that the gambler had lost, Chan said. Consequently, the gambler never lost any money playing the slot machine. Moreover, he kept all his winnings.

The Judiciary Police discovered that Ng committed the same crime 29 times between December 21 and January 18, Chan said.

According to Chan, the Judiciary Police caught the duo red-handed when they committed the same ruse again on Saturday. The duo confessed. The Judiciary Police are continuing their investigation to track down Ng’s other partner in crime who played the same role as Tang in the ruse.

The duo were transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) on Monday, facing an embezzlement charge, according to Chan.
