Zhuhai’s Gongbei customs has announced that its officers have caught a man attempting to bring HK$1 million in cash to Macau in his car via the Macau-Zhuhai checkpoint on the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge (HZMB), exceeding the official maximum amount of cash that a traveller is permitted to carry when leaving the mainland.
Gongbei customs announced the case, which occurred on Friday, in a statement on Saturday.
On Friday, customs officers at the HZMB Macau-Zhuhai checkpoint checked a car with a dual Macau-mainland registration plate entering Macau driven by the man, when they found the HK$1 million cash in his luggage, the statement said.
The statement noted that a traveller is only permitted to carry foreign currency equivalent to up to US$5,000 (HK$38,766) when leaving the mainland each time. Travellers must inform customs officers if they need to carry foreign currency exceeding the maximum amount.
The statement also noted that all the smuggled money exceeding the maximum amount permitted will be confiscated.
