Macau's general unemployment rate - comprising residents and non-resident workers - remained unchanged at 2.7 percent in the November 2020-January 2021 survey period over the previous period (October-December 2020), the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) has announced.
According to a DSEC statement last week, local residents' employment rate dropped by 0.1 percentage point to 3.7 percent.
The general underemployment rate dipped by 0.6 percentage points to 4.4 percent.
The labour force living in Macau totalled 400,100 while the labour force participation rate amounted to 70.5 percent. Total employment was 389,200 and the number of employed residents totalled 284,100, up by 400 and 2,600 respectively from the previous survey period.
While employment in the wholesale, retail and education sectors increased, the number of employees in the construction sector decreased.
The number of the unemployed fell by 100 from the previous period to 10,900. The number of the underemployed dropped by 2,500 to 17,700, with the majority working in the gaming, junket, transport and warehousing sectors.
Compared with November 2019-January 2020, the underemployment rate and the unemployment rate rose by 4.0 and 1.0 percentage points respectively, while the labour force participation rate fell by 0.2 percentage points.
Based on immigration records cited by the bureau, Macau residents and non-resident workers who in the November 2020-January 2021 period worked in Macau but lived outside the special administrative region were estimated at 83,000; when including these employees, Macau's total labour force stood at 483,100, an increase of 100 from the previous period.
