A local male university student was arrested on February 16 for insulting a traffic police officer, Public Security Police (PSP) spokeswoman Lai In Hong said at a regular press conference yesterday.
The suspect surnamed Tam is in his twenties.
Lai did not identify the university.
According to Lai, the Public Security Police received an email on February 3 informing them that someone publicly insulted a traffic police officer on social media. PSP officers identified Tam and told him to report to a police station on February 16. Under questioning, Tam admitted that he insulted the officer. He told the police that when he was riding his scooter in Avenida Dr. Sun Yat-Sen at around 3 a.m. on February 3, he was stopped by the officer because his scooter’s lights were not on. The officer then issued him with a penalty ticket.
After Tam returned home, he was unhappy and took a screenshot of the ticket showing the officer’s police identification number, and posted it on a social media platform. In addition, he also wrote insulting remarks about the officer to vent his dissatisfaction about receiving the ticket.
Lai did not identify the social media platform used by the student. However, she said that it wasn’t Facebook.
Tam has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing insult and libel charges, according to Lai.
