3 Filipinos cycle down St Paul’s Ruins staircase: police

Three Filipinos are facing charges for riding their bicycles down the staircase of the Ruins of St Paul’s recently, violating the road traffic law, the Public Security Police (PSP) said in a statement on Wednesday.

According to the statement, the Public Security Police had noticed that a resident recently posted on social media several photos of people riding their bicycles down the staircase of the Ruins of St. Paul’s at night. PSP officers identified three suspects and told them to report to a police station for questioning.

The statement said that the trio are Filipino non-resident workers in their twenties and thirties. They confirmed that they rode their bikes down the staircase. The suspects face charges of breaching the road traffic law.

The Public Security Police urged drivers and riders to take into account pedestrians’ safety. In order to avoid causing traffic accidents, they should not drive any motor vehicles or ride bicycles in areas reserved for pedestrians. Offenders may be fined 600 patacas, the statement pointed out.

The St Paul’s Ruins is a UNESCO World Heritage-listed monument.
