Sports Bureau (ID) President Pun Weng Kun told reporters yesterday that the FIVB Volleyball Women’s Nations League (VNL) cancelled its competition in Macau, adding that Rimini in Italy will be the only city hosting both men’s and women’s competitions in a single secure bubble.

Pun made the remarks on the sidelines of a press conference for the “Macau International Dragon Boat Races 2021” at the bureau’s headquarters in Zape.

Pun said that VNL had cancelled its usual city stops and would only hold the games in the Italian resort city of Rimini. He also reminded the media that the Wushu Masters Challenge was cancelled last year, adding that the bureau is not considering to reinstating the event this year.

During yesterday’s press conference, Pun announced that this year’s International Dragon Boat Races will be held from June 12 to 14 at Nam Van Lake Nautical Centre. Pun said that small dragon boat races will be held on June 13 and standard dragon boat races on the day of the Duanwu Festival (Dragon Boat Festival), which is on June 14. Pun said those interested in joining the races can register in person at the office of the local Dragon Boat Association, or online at www.cmdragonboat.org.mo starting from tomorrow until April 7 at 7 p.m.

Pun said that this year’s races offer limited registration places for six categories, namely the Macau Small Dragon Boat Race (48 teams for the Open Category, 18 teams for the Women’s Category), Macau Public Entities Small Dragon Boat Race (12 teams), Macau University Students Small Dragon Boat Race (8 teams in the Open Category) and Macau Standard Dragon Boat Race (30 teams in the Open Category and 10 teams for the Women’s Category).

According to Pun, as the pandemic situation remains stable in both the mainland and Macau, the bureau plans to invite teams from the mainland to compete in the Macau Standard Dragon Boat Race (Open Category and Women’s Category), adding that the invitation would raise the level of competition and intensify the exchange of sporting activities between the mainland and Macau.

Along with the races, Pun said that there will also be a dragon boat-themed family carnival on June 12, where the general public may enjoy the fun atmosphere through a variety of booth games and activities
