A 19-year-old a student studying at a local university was cheated out of 29,300 yuan (35,900 patacas) in two separate online scams on Monday, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Leng Kam Lun said at a regular press conference yesterday.

According to Leng, the victim who is from the mainland and studying at a local university, reported to the Judiciary Police on Tuesday that he had been defrauded in two online scams on the previous day. He told the police that he met a female netizen on Monday through a social media app who said that she could have sex with him in Macau for 800 yuan. The student then made an appointment to meet the woman in a hotel in Cotai the following day.

However, before going to the hotel, the “woman” informed him that he needed to pay 2,200 yuan for their first sexual encounter as a “security deposit” and 1,700 yuan as a “registration fee”. The victim transferred the amounts via his smartphone, but immediately afterwards he was unable to contact the “woman” through the app.

Leng said the victim was determined to get his money back. He saw a message from a social media group that a netizen was able to help get the money back, but he needed to pay 25,300 yuan as a “handling fee”. Immediately after transferring the “handling fee” he was unable to contact that person through the app.

The victim finally realised that he had been defrauded and decided to report the two cases to the police, according to Leng.
