Macau’s visitor arrivals reached 34,252 on Friday, which is the highest number recorded since the COVID-19 pandemic started to impact Macau in January last year, the Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO) said in a statement on Saturday.

Macau confirmed its first COVID-19 case on January 22, 2020.

According to the statement, the number of visitors has been increasing recently. For instance, between April 9 and April 15 the government recorded 191,828 visitors, a daily average of 27,404. The statement said that compared with the Chinese New Year holiday period, the figure was a 111.7 percent increase.

The statement pointed out that hotel and guesthouses’ average occupancy rate was 61 percent during the April 9-15 period, adding that compared to the Chinese New Year holiday period, the occupancy rate increased by 12.7 percentage points.

The statement said that “the steady upward trend in visitor arrivals represents a greater flow of visitors,” pointing out that the pandemic situation remains stable in the mainland and Macau.

Given the situation, MGTO has seized the opportunity to roll out a string of online and offline promotions tailored for the mainland market by continuously advertising Macau as a “healthy, safe and quality destination”, according to the statement.
