The Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) urged local rice dumpling (糭子) producers yesterday to abide by the food safety guidelines while making the Dragon Boast Festival treats.
An IAM statement reminded the producers that the bureau will collaborate with the Consumer Council to randomly check and sample rice dumplings to ensure they meet its guidelines.
According to the statement, local shops sell rice dumplings with different fillings. The bureau stressed that producers must ensure the ingredients used in the rice dumplings satisfy the government’s food safety guidelines. The statement underlined that producers must follow the Food Safety Law, the List of Prohibited Substances for Use in Food, and the Guideline on Microorganisms Contained in Instant Food.
If the bureau finds any regulatory violations, the producer will face legal consequences, the statement said.
The bureau reminded the producers to be careful when choosing the leaves for the rice dumpling, adding that a leaf should not contain a strong or weird odour, but neither should the leaf be bright green. The bureau suggested the producers soak and rinse the leaves before using them and clean off the excess dirt on the leaves.
Moreover, the statement also warned the food industry to choose its suppliers carefully and keep its import or export receipts. The statement also said that when making the dumplings, producers should carefully cook the ingredients, and when cooking, cooling down and storing the rice dumpling, producers should carefully monitor the temperature.
