The carcass of an adult finless porpoise was found at the rocky beach near Coloane’s Long Chao Kok coastline yesterday morning, a Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) statement said yesterday.

According to the statement, the bureau received a report regarding a dead cetacean, and dispatched several officials to the scene soon after. The statement said that the Marine and Water Bureau (DSAMA) also sent out vessels to help bring the dead porpoise ashore.

The statement said that based on a brief assessment, the cetacean measured 1.63 metres in length. The statement pointed out that the porpoise had a bloated stomach, its organs were showing and large area of its skin was peeling off.

The statement said the bureau believed that the porpoise died before being washed ashore. The statement added that for hygiene reasons the bureau decided to contact a cleaning company to help cremate the aquatic mammal.

The Municipal Affairs Bureau urged the public to call its hotline 2833 7676 if they see any dead cetacean.
