The Chinese Academy of History has set up its Research Centre for Macau History at the Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST), and a ceremony marking its establishment was held on the campus of the private university in Taipa yesterday.
The Chinese Academy of History, which was set up in 2019, is an affiliate of the Beijing-based Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), a ministry-level institution set up in 1977 directly under the State Council.
Apart from senior members of the new Research Centre for Macau History, yesterday’s ceremony was also attended by senior members of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, senior members of the Chinese Academy of History, senior members of the Macau University of Science and Technology, and a number of officials of the Macau government, according to a MUST statement yesterday.
During a speech at the ceremony, Gao Xiang, who heads the Chinese Academy of History, noted that Macau’s history is an integral part of Chinese history, and Macau’s history is closely related to, and inseparable from, the motherland’s history.
Gao also noted that the setting-up of the Research Centre for Macau History is among the important measures to realise the spirit laid out by President Xi Jinping in his message for the establishment of the Chinese Academy of History.
The setting-up of the Research Centre for Macau History aims to develop an academic system for Macau history with Chinese characteristics, Gao said, adding that the Research Centre for Macau History is the first research institution that the Chinese Academy of History has jointly set up with another scientific institution.
In a speech, MUST President Joseph Lee Hun-wei thanked the State Council’s Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office, the Chinese Academy of History, the Central People’s Government Liaison Office in Macau, and the local government for their strong support so that the Research Centre for Macau History can be established.
Lee said that the establishment of the Research Centre for Macau History signifies that his university has made important progress in the development of history-related research and teaching.
