Macau's casinos in May recorded gross gaming revenues of 10.4 billion patacas (US$1.31 billion), a year-on-year growth of 492.2 percent, their best takings since the COVID-19 pandemic began to severely affect Macau in February 2020, the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ) announced today.
In January 2020, the casino sector's receipts amounted to 22.12 billion patacas. Macau confirmed its first COVID-19 case on January 22 last year.
Month-on-month, May's revenues rose by 24.3 percent.
In the first five months of the year, casino revenues rose by 28.7 percent to 42.48 billion patacas.
At the end of March, 37 casinos owned by six operators were in business, according to the latest available DICJ figures. The operations of four casinos owned by SJM were suspended at that time.
