Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng will lead a local government delegation to visit Shanghai from today to Sunday, for the first Shanghai-Macau Cooperation Conference and to discuss with the municipality’s officials new ways of boosting bilateral ties, the Macau Government Information Bureau (GCS) said in a statement yesterday.

Ho and other members of the delegation will attend the opening of “Macau Week in Shanghai”, this evening and while in Shanghai will also visit a number of industrial projects, aiming to gain a better understanding of the mega-city’s latest developments.

Ho’s entourage includes Secretary for Economy and Finance Lei Wai Nong, Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture Elsie Ao Ieong U, GCS Director Inês Chan Lou and Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO) Director Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes.

During Ho’s absence, Secretary for Administration and Justice André Cheong Weng Chon will be acting chief executive.

The local government and its Shanghai counterpart signed in November 2019 an arrangement for establishing a Shanghai-Macau cooperation conference mechanism, covering financial services, the MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions) industry, and education and youth affairs. The aim of the mechanism is to advance practical cooperation between Shanghai and Macau, and take it to a new level, while benefitting the two places’ economic and social development.

Shanghai (“Upon the Sea”) has a population of 25 million. Alongside Hong Kong, it is one of the nation’s two main financial hubs.
