A lucky gambler from the mainland was robbed of his winnings of HK$1.3 million in a hotel guestroom early on Friday by a friend and another man, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Leng Kam Lon said at a press conference on Friday.

According to Leng, the Public Security Police notified the Judiciary Police at about 3 a.m. on Friday about a robbery case at a hotel in the city centre earlier that day. PJ officers went to the hotel to investigate. The victim told the police that he had won HK$1.3 million in a casino in Cotai around midnight that day. He called a male friend, who he had met in a local casino about six months ago, to tell him about his winning streak. Both decided to meet at the friend’s hotel guestroom. The lucky gambler went to the guestroom where he met his friend and another man he didn’t know.

After about 20 minutes that man suddenly attacked him from behind, while his friend attacked him with what appeared to be a stun gun. The two men tied the victims’ hands, feet and both knees with packing tape and stuck tape over his mouth, after which they left the room with the victim’s bag and the HK$1.3 million in cash.

Leng said the victim later managed to untie himself and reported the case to the police with the help of the hotel’s front desk. He reported the loss of his manbag worth 25,700 patacas, HK$1.3 million in cash and two smartphones worth about 18,000 patacas.

No-one had been arrested at the time of Friday afternoon’s press conference, according to Leng.
