An American student studying at a local university was arrested for shoplifting from a fashion shop in Cotai on Thursday, Public Security Police (PSP) spokeswoman Lai In Hong said at a press conference yesterday.

The suspect is a non-permanent resident surnamed Allen who is enrolled in a local university. He is an American citizen in his twenties, Lei said.

According to Lai, a sales assistant of a fashion shop in a mall in Cotai reported a shoplifting case to the Public Security Police on Thursday afternoon. PSP officers went to the shop to investigate. Two sales assistants told the police that when the shop’s anti-theft alarm went off earlier that day they discovered a man acting suspiciously outside the shop and stopped him. The man agreed that they could check his bag. The sales assistants found a shirt worth 149 patacas in the bag that had not been paid for and called the police.

Under questioning, Allen told the police that he took two shirts and put them in his shopping bag but only paid for one. He admitted to stealing one shirt from the shop.

Allen has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing a theft charge, according to Lai.
