A non-resident worker was arrested on Sunday for sexually harassing a female passer-by wearing hotpants when she was walking from Rua do Campo towards Avenida do Conselheiro Ferreira de Almeida on Saturday evening, Public Security Police (PSP) spokeswoman Lai In Hong said at a press conference yesterday.
The suspect is a mainlander surnamed Wang in his forties.
According to Lai, a local woman in her twenties went to a police station on Saturday evening and told the police that she had been sexually harassed by a man earlier that day. She noticed that a man who was walking towards her looked at her in a strange way so that she kept an eye on him.
When they walked close to each other, the man suddenly stretched out his right hand and tried to touch her lower body, but the woman managed to use her left hand to stop him making contact. The man ran away and the victim immediately reported the case to the police.
Thanks to the area’s CCTV footage, PSP officers identified Wang and intercepted him in Rua do Sol, a street near the Portuguese Consulate General, on Sunday morning. Wang was taken to a police station for questioning. He admitted that he sexually harassed the victim because he was attracted to her as she was wearing hotpants, Lai said.
Wang has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing a sexual harassment charge, according to Lai.
