A painting and installation exhibition entitled “The Endless Desire” (無盡的欲望) by local artist Zheng Yu (鄭宇) is being held at Creative Macau – Centre for Creative Industries. The event is supported by the Macau Cultural Centre (CCM).

The exhibits comprise paintings of apples as well as installations consisting of apples.

According to a statement on the organiser’s website, Zheng was born in 1978 in Hainan province. He lives and works in Macau.

The statement points out that Zheng’s works currently focus on “people” and “emotions”. He attempts to investigate how to integrate “emotions” into his works through artistic experiments, according to the statement.

“He uses his deep understanding of traditional Chinese art to integrate his work with Western-style art presentation.

“To express the reflection of modern society and people’s lifestyles, Zheng’s works represent modern city people’s psychological condition of restlessness and anxiousness,” the statement points out.

The statement underlines that desire “is the most primitive and basic instinct of all animals in the world,” adding that “from the human point of view, it is a kind of mental and physical content, and it is an indispensable demand for the existence of all animals.

“The most basic desire of all animals is to live and exist, in other words, love and dissatisfaction.”

Historically, the statement underlines, people have used the apple as a symbol of “desire”, such as the forbidden apple in the Bible and in the Chinese movie “Apple” (its English title is “Lost in Beijing”) about the situation of workers facing their desires in civil society.

Zheng presents his thoughts on people’s desires in contemporary society through his unique artworks that depict apples to express his thoughts and denotes his artistic experiments, according to the statement.

The exhibition is on until June 26 on the ground floor of the Macau Cultural Centre complex in Nape from Monday to Saturday except Sundays and public holidays from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The paintings are for sale, priced at between 30,000 and 200,000 patacas.
