A “washing machine” event entitled “What Are We Waiting for” (洗濯万華機), organised by graduates and students of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA) in conjunction with Albergue SCM and the Macau Heritage Ambassadors Association (MHAA), will be held at Albergue SCM from tomorrow to next Wednesday.

According to a statement provided by Albergue SCM, the event is an interactive installation. Through the installation, which appears to be a washing machine, visitors can experience a “washing procedure” with people in Hong Kong and Japan through a video clip and online communication software. By looking into the installation visitors can experience the past and the present.

The statement said that the event’s washing machine is separated from its original and ordinary context and value, and re-presented with a new purpose. Those who look into the washing machine won’t be waiting for their washing to be done. Instead, they will face part of the installation’s creators’ current situations of a “new normal” (新常態) under the COVID-19 pandemic through music and kaleidoscopic images manipulated by mirrors and video work.

The washing procedure offers visitors time for contemplation and self-reflection, possibly resulting in expectations and even anxiety.

The installation is created by HKAPA graduates and students comprising Kenneth Cheong Wai Kit (Installation Curator, Macau), Zoe Wong Yan Tung (Hong Kong), Frances Leong Yuen Tung (Hong Kong), Yoyo Yau Yau Yin (Hong Kong), Angel Chiu Oi Ying (Hong Kong), Clara Ho Sze Wing (Hong Kong), Ayami Oki-Siekierczak (Japan), according to the statement.

Visitors can make an appointment to join the interactive installation experience on a first-come-first-served basis. Visit: https://forms.gle/6Mfb7nqSMpq53dp59 or scan the QR code.

The installation will be exhibited on the patio in Albergue SCM, 8 Calçada da Igreja de São Lázaro, from tomorrow to next Wednesday. It opens from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. daily. Admission is free.

For enquiries, call 2852 2550 or 2852 3205.

As part of the COVID-19 preventive measures, visitors entering the venue should wear a facemask, have their temperature checked and present a digital health code.
