A doorman in his sixties was arrested for stealing a motorcycle, claiming that he did it “just for fun”, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Cheuk Kou Chi said at yesterday’s press briefing.

The suspect is a non-resident worker from the mainland surnamed Su.

According to Cheuk, a man reported to the Public Security Police last Thursday that his motorcycle worth 8,200 patacas he had parked in Estrada da Baía de Nossa Senhora da Esperança in Taipa in the morning had gone when he returned there in the afternoon. Thanks to CCTV footage, the Public Security Police confirmed that Su had parked his motorcycle next to the victim’s. He then rode away on the victim’s motorbike and parked it in the nearby Avenida Cidade Nova.

Having confirmed his motorcycle’s registration number, the Public Security Police arrested Su in a flat in Estrada Marginal da Areia Preta on Saturday. Su claimed that when he parked his motorbike next to the victim’s he saw that the owner had left the key in the ignition.

So he rode it “just for fun” and parked it in Avenida Cidade Nova, leaving the key in the helmet box. He then walked back to his motorcycle and rode away. PSP officers later found the victim’s motorcycle and told him where to pick it up, Cheuk said.

Su was transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) yesterday, facing a motor vehicle theft charge, according to Cheuk.
